Analysis of Objectification in Music Videos

‘Work It’ By Nelly ft Justin Timberlake

This music video centres on the female body and is a prime example of female objectification. The erogenous zones of the body, in particular; the legs, breasts, lips, bum and torsos are focused on. The shots of the women featured in the video are never seen fully in a long shot, but only mid/body shot or close ups on specific body parts. Because the video has objectified the women , the audience is able to treat them impersonally and so it is more widely accepted in the music industry. The reference to Hugh Hefner and the Playboy mansion promotes the polygamy-like impression given by Hefner's multiple girlfriends and their openly active sex life.
This glossy, reasonably high budget style of music video is typical in the urban, R'n'B genre of music. The culture of Hip Hop, rap style music, often found in America, is known for it's objectification of womenand use of figure-perfect female models.
